The National Association for Public Defense (NAPD) has announced Lori James-Townes as its new Executive Director. With a background as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and extensive experience in public defense, Lori is recognized for her commitment to advocacy and support for public defense teams. NAPD Steering Committee Chair Derwyn Bunton praised her track record of empowering others and expressed enthusiasm for the vision and leadership she will bring to the organization. Lori has been instrumental in organizing major events, including NAPD's Women's Conference and the National Virtual Conference for Gideon Week, showcasing her dedication to public defense reform. Lori's leadership experience includes serving as the Assistant Training Director for NAPD and over 25 years working with defense teams for indigent defendants. She previously held a significant role in the Maryland Office of the Public Defender, where she established the first Director of Leadership position in a public defender office nationwide. As President & CEO of Expand Now, she focuses on personal and professional development. Lori is also involved with various community boards and organizations, contributing to the growth of social justice leaders and public defense professionals across the country.
